About Us

Michael Unger and Michael Mahns are the founding partners of Unger + Mahns Architects, PC, located in Red Bank, New Jersey.  Both are graduates of the Syracuse University School of Architecture.

Established in 1997, their practice has consistently focused on giving form to their client’s needs, program, and tastes, maximizing the use of the site, respecting the project budget, and utilizing proven construction technology.  The results have been buildings and homes of enduring value.

The partners strive to integrate the details of the interior, as well as characteristics of the site and context, into their work.  This is accomplished in-house, or in partnership with the client’s consultants.

Rather than adhering to a particular style, their architecture embodies both innovation and tradition. Every completed work is the product of collaboration between the client, architect, and builder.  Regardless of size an architectural commission is an opportunity to produce a unique solution that fulfills the client’s objectives.

Although the practice is not exclusively preservationist, the firm has been awarded recognition for the sensitive renovation and restoration of historic buildings.

The partners maintain licenses in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, and North Carolina, and are certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.  The partners have also consulted on projects in Maine, Vermont, Colorado, Idaho and London, England.

Commissions have included residential, commercial, medical and social-cultural building types.
